Local rising star provides music for new Visit Derry tourism campaign

A talented young Derry~Londonderry musician has been selected to provide the soundtrack to a new advertising campaign aimed at showcasing the city as an ideal short break destination.

18-year-old Roisin Donald, who performs under the name ROE, has lent her single ‘Closer to You’ as the soundtrack for Visit Derry’s ‘Discover Wall to Wall Inspiration’ short breaks campaign which will air on Thursday 13th April for the first time.

Visit Derry has launched its latest campaign after a tremendous start to 2017 with hotel occupancy rates continuing their record performance from 2016 through the first few months of 2017.

The campaign will highlight the many festivals and events taking place across the city this Spring including the City of Derry Jazz and Big Band Festival, the Walled City Tattoo and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat.

ROE is a rising star of the music industry having caught the attention of BBC Radio 6’s Tom Robinson, performed at Stendhal Festival of Art in 2016 and collaborated with MOBO award nominated David Lyttle.

‘Closer to You’ has also been used on BBC NI documentary ‘Love in a Day’ which was filmed over 24 hours in the summer of 2016 and aired in February 2017.

Speaking about her music being used by Visit Derry, the talented ROE said: “Derry is my home and I’m a passionate supporter of the city, so it’s a great honour for my music to be selected as the soundtrack for Visit Derry’s advertising campaign.

“I love writing music, performing live and sharing what I have to say through my songs and the last 12 months has been a whirlwind start to my music career. It’s great that so many opportunities have presented themselves, which have given me the chance to build my profile and get my music recognised.”

Speaking about the new tourism campaign, Odhran Dunne, Manager at Visit Derry said: “This ‘Discover Wall to Wall Inspiration’ campaign aims to showcase Derry as a short break destination for visitors from across Northern Ireland. Whether you’re planning a daytrip or a weekend break, you’ll find our walled city crammed full of great food, entertainment, history, heritage, culture and an especially warm welcome.”

“We have a stellar Spring line-up of festivals and events taking place across the city. The City of Derry Jazz and Big Band Festival will return from 27th April to 1st May offering music lovers a fantastic programme of live music in over 50 venues across the city, with the extremely talented Irish musician Imelda May headlining.

“The Walled City Tattoo will return to the Millennium Forum on Friday 12th and Saturday 13th May with a brand-new show featuring international drum specialists, The Copenhagen Drummers as headliners. X Factor Winner Joe McElderry will star in Time Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s family musical ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat’ as the record breaking tour arrives at the Millennium Forum from 30th May to 3rd June.

“The newly opened multi-million-pound Museum of Free Derry and the Apprentice Boys of Derry’s Siege Museum are proving to be hugely successful with visitors flocking from across Northern Ireland and beyond.

“The city also has developed a reputation as a real foodie destination with some of the best restaurants in Northern Ireland, underlined by the fact that Brown’s Restaurant and Champagne Lounge was crowned the Best Restaurant in Ulster.

“Derry~Londonderry really does have something for everyone and with a two night short break in the city costing from as little as £75 per person sharing, we’d encourage anyone thinking about a short break to get the weekend booked in as soon as possible.”
