European Heritage Open Days 2017: 9-10 September

Each year hundreds of properties open their doors and many organisations put on events for FREE across Northern Ireland as part of European Heritage Open Days (EHOD). Here’s some of the properties and events you can get free access to in Derry~Londonderry on 9-10 September 2017:

 

Derry Walls Day

Event 2

This annual event takes place this year on 9 September. As part of the European Heritage Open Days weekend, the Friends of the Derry Walls have organised an exciting day of events including a sketching and history tour, a ‘Stone, Brick and Mortar’ tour, and a fantastic treasure hunt around the city walls, featuring appearances from some intriguing characters from the past!

The Guildhall

EHOD is the perfect opportunity to check out one of Derry’s most iconic landmarks. Fashioned in neo-gothic style, the Guildhall is one of the most striking buildings in the North West and was originally built in 1887 by The Honourable The Irish Society.

Museums

Event 3

Soak up all the historical information you can during EHOD 2017 – Derry’s fascinating museums will be giving the city’s visitors FREE admission to their properties. Check out the award-winning Tower Museum, located within the city’s historic walls where permanent exhibitions at the museum include The Story of Derry and the An Armada Shipwreck – La Trinidad Valencera. The newly refurbished Museum of Free Derry will also be taking part in EHOD 2017. Visit to learn about the city’s modern history including the emergence of the civil rights movement and the descent into conflict following the events of Bloody Sunday

Churches and Cathedrals

Discover the city’s architectural gems throughout EHOD weekend by visiting some of it’s beautiful churches and cathedrals. Various churches will invite the public to discover their beautiful grounds and property, including the First Derry Presbyterian Church and Saint Augustine’s Church, both located within the City Walls. The City’s two Cathedrals – Saint Columb’s and Saint Eugene’s, will also both be welcoming the public to explore their beautiful interiors, history and architecture.

Walking Tours

TIC 2007

Join Visit Derry on a FREE historical walking tour on both Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 September, departing from our Visitor Information Centre (44 Foyle Street) on both days at 15:00.
