Codetta Girls’ Choir have been given the amazing opportunity to perform alongside world-famous and award-winning vocal ensemble, Tenebrae, at this year’s City of Derry International Choir Festival in St. Columb’s Hall on Friday 27 October.
The concert is part of Tenebrae’s 15th anniversary tour of Joby Talbot’s ground-breaking work, Path of Miracles, and also includes the Northern Irish première of a brand new piece from composer Owain Park entitled Footsteps which features the Ulster Youth Chamber Choir and Codetta Girls’ Choir, Derry.
Dónal Doherty, Artistic Director of the Choir Festival, commented, “We are absolutely delighted to welcome Tenebrae to this year’s festival as part of their anniversary tour. This concert promises to be a very special event, with the involvement of both the Ulster Youth Chamber Choir and the recently formed Codetta Girls’ Choir alongside Tenebrae.
Both the Codetta Junior and Youth Choirs were launched in September 2017 to provide a choral pathway for singers from age 9 to adult within the Codetta family of choirs. Following a busy first few months of rehearsals, the girls from the Youth Choir are excited and privileged to be singing alongside one of the most renowned choral groups in the world for the performance of Owain Park’s Footsteps. We are also pleased to link the City of Culture 2013 with Hull, the current UK City of Culture, where the first performance of Footsteps was given earlier this year.”
Path of Miracles by Joby Talbot was the first major piece of music commissioned by Tenebrae in 2005. The work, inspired by the pilgrimage route to Santiago, received dazzling reviews at the time and returns this year for its 15th anniversary tour. Footsteps accompanies its revival and enables Derry’s local youth choirs to perform alongside Tenebrae. Each choir will also receive a workshop from Tenebrae professionals and a range of online resources including scores, guide audio tracks, performance tips and background context.
The concert promises to be a very special event, with an atmospheric performance by candlelight, using the full space of the wonderful St. Columb’s Hall to create an immersive audience experience.
