With the recent good weather giving us all hope that we may actually experience a Summer lasting more than a few days we have come up with a list of reasons why Derry~Londonderry should high up on your places to visit list this Summer!
If you are a fitness fanatic and enjoy challenging yourself in difficult terrain or just enjoy watching others struggle through mud mounds and tumble down slip ‘n’ slides then this is definitely not to be missed! Located in the picturesque Faughan Valley and consisting of over 50 man-made and natural obstacles, why not grab your friends and test yourselves against Ireland’s hardest 10km challenge.
Summer Jamm returns to Strabane for another weekend of amazing live performances from musicians, both local and further afield as well as family entertainments, busking competitions and Cullens Fun Fair. There is something for everyone at Summer Jamm with performances taking place all over the town with country artists such as Shane Owens and The Ward Sisters in the Summer Jamm Country Fest and The Hothouse Flowers and the Broken Bandits performing during the Strajamba Festival.
This is one not to be missed by any electronic music fan, Celtronic is the leading electronic music festival in Ireland. Celebrating it’s eighteenth anniversary this Summer with five days and nights of floor-filling music, film screenings, seminars, workshops, recording projects and incredible performances from world-renowned artists including: Roman Flugel, Gerd Jansen, DVS1, Steve Bug, Ulster Orchestra and many more!
Now, we know this one isn’t technically in Derry, however Ballyliffin Golf Course is only a 30 minute car journey, or a ‘short drive’ to be more relevant given the nature of the event, from The Walled City and if you are planning to come along to watch Rory and co. tee off this year’s Irish Open at the Co. Donegal golf course then why not make the most of your time and visit our historic city while you’re here?
This is the one we have all been waiting for here in Derry, the Foyle Maritime Festival really brings the River Foyle, the quay and the rest of The Walled City to life in week-long celebration as the Clipper boats dock in our waters. The quayside plays host to a fantastic collection of live music, entertainment and river based activities as the city becomes engrossed in Maritime magic. This year’s festival has the theme of ‘Voyages’ in acknowledge of the city and district’s rich maritime heritage and the journeys that we as a people and place have experienced.
Witness a breathtaking night of dance music across three stages in Derry~Londonderry’s Ebrington Square with world-renowed DJs. This is another not-to-be missed event for lovers of electronic music as Derry welcomes huge artists such as Paul Van Dyk, Gareth Emery, Route 94 and Danny Howard to the city!
O’Neills Foyle Cup continues to grow bigger and bigger each year and this year’s tournament is set to be no different with over 300 teams across multiple age groups and both boys and girls teams set to take part, a huge increase on the eight teams which competed back in the tournament’s inaugeral year, 1992. Derry prepares to host academy teams from top football clubs across the globe as these young and upcoming footballers aim to be crowned Foyle Cup winners 2018.
With barely enough time to recover from Together Music Festival, Ebrington Square again plays host to another night of floor fillers from the past 20 years. After two years of producing one of the most spectacular live music events, Lush! finally brings the breathtaking concert to Derry along with a fantastic 65-piece classical orchestra, world-renowned DJs and live vocalists set to bring their electric atmosphere to Derry~Londonderry for the first time.
Experience the Syndrome at the Best Small Music Festival in Ireland. Based slightly outside of the Walled City in Ballmully farm, Limavady. Stendhal Festival of Art is an incredible weekend overflowing with creativity and wonderful live performances and entertainment from artists from across the UK and Ireland and further afield. Attendees have the opportunity to camp for the duration of the festival in their own tents within the general camping or family camping areas or if you fancy something a bit more luxurious there are glamping facilities available .
Foyle Pride Festival aims to empower and celebrate the LGBT community in Derry~Londonderry and wider areas. Celebrating it’s 25th year in 2018 this year’s festival promises to be better than ever with live entertainment, workshops, stalls, seminars and of course the Foyle Pride Parade which departs from Waterside Train Station on Saturday 25th August at 14:00
One for the tattoo enthusiasts as the Everglades Hotel hosts the biggest tattoo convention in Northern Ireland, giving you the opportunity to get inked by award winning artists from all over the globe or learn some new tips for yourself. If you’re just looking to show off your own artwork or curb your curiosity you can be guaranteed a weekend full of great tattoos, great craic and great atmosphere.
Another event for the golf enthusiasts to add to their must- see list as Derry~Londonderry plays host to the biggest event in this year’s PGA calendar as the Bishop’s Gate Hotel Walled City of Derry Pro AM tournament gets set to take place between City of Derry Golf Club and Foyle International Golf Centre. 52 teams and a total of 208 golfers descend upon the city for the Bank Holiday weekend tournament. Foyle Golf Academy will also welcome the stars of the next generation, encouraging young golfers between the ages of 6-14 to get involved in the sport.
End the August Bank Holiday weekend with a bang as Jika Jika! are set to bring something new and exciting to Ebrington Square with their inaugural electronic music festival brings a selection of world-renowned artists to The Walled City with stages curated by the likes of Denis Sulta, Green Velvet and Patrick Topping plus many more in a sure to be unmissable 2 days of deep house, techno and electro music.
