Visitor numbers and hotel occupancy broke new records for the city when up to 220,000 people are estimated to have enjoyed the packed programme of nautical themed activities during the internationally renowned Foyle Maritime Festival (July 14th-22nd).
Hotel occupancy was 91.29% for the period of the festival during which the city hosted the Clipper 2017-2018 Round the World Race and the 2018 O’Neills Foyle Cup which saw over 400 youth soccer teams competing in venues across the north west.
Hundreds lined the Quay to bid farewell to the Clipper Race teams as they set sail for Liverpool on the final day of our hugely successful Maritime Festival. It was an emotional send-off after 10 days of celebrations for the crews of the 11 visiting yachts during their stopover in the city.
Summing up the festivities, Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Councillor John Boyle, said: “Once again we’ve demonstrated our ability to stage an international event generating substantial revenue for the local economy, and enhancing the region’s profile as an exciting and unique visitor destination.”
