Derry~Londonderry, which is renowned as Ireland’s only completely Walled City and one of the finest in Europe, was last week showcased as a leading international visitor destination at one of the world’s most important exhibitions in the tourism industry with unrivalled global reach.
Visit Derry was among a large number of high profile global visitor destination organisations who participated at World Travel Market (WTM) London, on November 5th-7th 2018.
Odhran Dunne, General Manager of Visit Derry, said WTM London was the leading event for world travel providers, attracting high-quality visitors from across the globe with huge potential to secure valuable new business for the city which is also the hub from which to explore Ireland’s North West.
He continued: “World Travel Market is the leading global event for the travel industry to meet industry professionals and to share our key visitor destination messages and, we’re delighted to be supporting Tourism Ireland and their key brand messages in selling the island as one of the world’s top visitor destinations.
“At the fair, visitors and exhibitors were presented with great opportunities for networking that can result in all-important sales opportunities for tourism and hospitality businesses in our historic Walled City where the Wild Atlantic Way meets the Causeway Coastal Route.”
Mr. Dunne pointed out that as well as offering excellent value for money and competitively priced experiences, there was even more reason to visit Derry over the next year during celebrations planned to mark the 400th anniversary of the completion of the historic City Walls, one of the finest walled fortifications in Europe, in March 2019.
“Derry’s famous Walls which are the backdrop to a unique history incorporating the wider story of Derry, will be the focus of a special programme of events celebrating 400 years since the completion of the building of the world famous landmark. This celebration will provide a great opportunity for visitors to experience the Walled City at its very best.
“Over 400,000 people each year already visit our iconic 17th Century Walls with the prospect of further developing the tourism potential and drawing even more visitors from home and abroad.
“Our greatest selling point is the people – we guarantee the warmest of welcomes with locals on hand to ensure a destination experience that is LegenDerry and we look forward to welcoming many thousands more visitors as a result of contacts made by the Visit Derry team at World Travel Market last week.”
Last year WTM London is said to have sparked a million meetings, resulting in around £3 billion in contracts.
